Stephanie Hausotter
Head of Admissions
Bard College Berlin, Germany
What drew you to the world of college admission counseling?
As the daughter of two public school teachers, the field of education was a place I always imagined I would find myself. As I grew more interested in access to education during my Fulbright year in Germany and in graduate school, the opportunity to work in admissions for a transatlantic institution was the perfect fit for me.
What is your favorite part of the job?
Watching students go from prospective students to enrollment to graduation.
How has NACAC played a role in your career?
NACAC has been an invaluable source of professional development and guidance. I joined NACAC as part of the process of bringing my institution onto the Common Application, and Bard College Berlin has consistently benefitted from the network and all it provides.
What do you think is the biggest challenge facing our profession today?
In a word: uncertainty. Over the past few years it feels like we have just been impacted by one crisis after the next (pandemic, war, FAFSA chaos, etc.). Delivering the stability institutions need in unstable times is a challenge.
When you aren’t working, what do you like to do?
Spend time with my kids and explore the amazing city of Berlin.
If you could be any fictional character, who would it be and why?
I would love to be Dumbledore and react to any development, no matter how crazy, with the ultimate grace and wisdom.
