Timothy L. Fields
Senior Associate Dean of Undergraduate Admission
Emory University (GA)

What drew you to the world of college admission counseling?
Since both my parents were teachers, I grew up around education and loved it. However, I quickly realized that being in a classroom wasn’t my thing — I didn’t quite have the patience for that! Luckily, higher education turned out to be just the right path for me. As I explored various roles, I found my passion in admissions. It’s the perfect mix of travel, promoting access to education, and getting to chat with lots of people — all while doing something I really enjoy!

What is your favorite part of the job?
I love traveling, but my true passion lies in championing equity and access to education. I believe that everyone deserves the chance to benefit from the wealth of opportunities that a postsecondary education can provide!

How has NACAC played a role in your career?
NACAC has enabled me to connect with colleagues from diverse backgrounds and perspectives, enhancing my understanding of college admissions from both sides of the desk.

What do you think is the biggest challenge facing our profession today?
I truly believe that FEAR is the greatest challenge confronting our profession today. Although I recognize the obstacles we face in our industry, now is not the time to retreat. Instead, we must dare to be bold and innovate in our approaches so that we can ensure postsecondary education remains accessible and achievable for every student.

When you aren’t working, what do you like to do?
When I’m not working, I find joy in running, exploring the world through travel, discovering treasures while thrifting, and cherishing every moment with family and friends.

What five words would you use to describe yourself?
Easy-going, loyal, fun, spontaneous, and stubborn (family made me put this one).
