What drew you to the world of college admission counseling?
As I was preparing to graduate from college, a favorite college administrator encouraged me to apply for a new position in the admissions office focusing on diversity. Unlike others who have followed a path to the admission field, I had never worked in the admissions office as a tour guide or student worker. I was a public relations major and would be working at my alma mater, so I thought I would give it a try. Ironically, I thought I would only do it for a couple of years, but 33 years later it has been an incredible career.
What is your favorite part of the job?
It is all about the students for me! I always say that being in the field of education is one of those jobs where you actually get to watch people grow and flourish before your very eyes. To know that I played a tiny part in getting students started on their college journey is so very rewarding!
How has NACAC played a role in your career?
I have been fortunate enough to be a member of NACAC since 1997. Being a part of this amazing association has helped me grow as a professional and a leader. It also helped me to understand the important issues impacting our profession, which prepared me for the roles I have held in admissions. To date, I have attended a whopping 27 NACAC conferences (including L.A. in September) where I have been exposed to new ideas and the latest trends. I served multiple times as a presenter and delegate and always have had fantastic opportunities to network with my colleagues. I recently completed a three-year term as a member of the NACAC Governance and Nominating Committee and had the honor of serving as OACAC’s president back in 2018. I realize that these roles would not have been possible without the encouragement from colleagues and the experiences that I had in OACAC and NACAC. I remain closely connected to my NACAC Affiliate Presidents class (Cabo), which is an incredible group of leaders and friends that I truly cherish!
What do you think is the biggest challenge facing our profession today?
The ripple effect of the FAFSA debacle has been alarming, and it caused so much confusion for students and colleges. As a result, there were students who decided not to even attend college, and universities not making their classes. It must get better!
When you aren’t working, what do you like to do?
I enjoy vacationing anywhere near water, singing, spending time with my family and friends, hosting gatherings, and working in my community with my sorority sisters of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated.
What five words would you use to describe yourself?
Positive. Motivated. Compassionate. Energetic. Kind.
