NACAC and ASCA joint statement on Supreme Court decision on race-conscious admission
June 29, 2023
The National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC) and the American School Counselor Association (ASCA), organizations that represent the educators who most closely work with students in the college admissions process, express our collective disappointment with the Supreme Court’s ruling that colleges and universities must eliminate consideration of race by student identification in admissions.
The court’s further restriction of how race-conscious admission can be applied disregards the need for diversity in the student experience and its importance for the future of our country. Even as the court’s opinions change the factors admission officers can consider, we remain resolute in our pursuit of diversity and equity in college admission policy and practice.
In this moment, the message from the education community to students of color is clear – not only do you belong in higher education, but we need you in our classrooms and on our campuses across the country. You are valued and your perspectives are needed as we strive to solve the biggest issues of our day. Our universities are engaged in nation-building work, and we need everyone from across the nation to have access to colleges and universities so that we can continue to be globally competitive.
