Guy Hatch
Senior Assistant Director of Admissions
Kenyon College (OH)
What drew you to the world of college admission counseling?
I was drawn to the world of college admission counseling because I saw an opportunity to provide guidance and to open doors for youth. I started my career in recruitment at the high school level with student-athletes. I recognized the great need that there was for caring, holistic college counseling, so I decided to pursue a career on the college side.
What is your favorite part of the job?
My favorite part of the job is collaborating with colleagues who share my passion for access and inclusion to higher education for students from historically marginalized backgrounds.
How has NACAC played a role in your career?
I had the pleasure of attending my first professional conference through NACAC, Guiding the Way to Inclusion. I made meaningful professional connections with colleagues who I now consider mentors and friends.
What do you think is the biggest challenge facing our profession today?
The biggest challenge facing college admission today is exclusivity. Too many obstacles exist that separate the āhavesā and āhave notsā and prevent deserving individuals from attending the most prestigious colleges. Higher education was built on exclusionary models that we must continue to fight against today to truly make our campuses more equitable and accessible.
When you arenāt working, what do you like to do?
Outside of work, I like spending time with my wife and son, watching movies, going for walks in the park, and traveling. I also enjoy having a glass of wine while blaring music and getting some cleaning done.
If you could be any fictional character, who would it be and why?
If I could be a fictional character, I would be Shuri from Black Panther. Sheās smart, sheās passionate about social justice, sheās dedicated to her craft, and sheās a fierce fighter for her family.
